Author David Haldane launches his latest book, “Dark Skies: Tales of Turbulence in Paradise,” along with a special event dubbed “Libro Kontra Gutom” and dedicated to a cause close to his heart: the fight against hunger.

“This book is a tribute to resilience,” Haldane says. “And I couldn’t think of a better way to honor that than by supporting those who wake up every day wondering where their next meal will come from.”

“Dark Skies” is a collection of essays that fuse literature and social impact. It picks up where Haldane’s award-winning 2023 book, “A Tooth in My Popsicle,” left off, chronicling what The Manila Times has called “the storms—literal and metaphorical—he’s weathered” since moving to the Philippines with his Filipino wife and two children in 2018.

The book launch will take place starting at 4 p.m. on Aug. 27 at Kawa Pilipinas House on 1025 C. Ayala Street in Malate, Manila. The evening promises meaningful dialogue among literary figures, advocates and community leaders, as well as literary celebration and tangible action. All proceeds from the event and a portion of book sales will benefit Kawa Pilipinas Foundation. Tickets are available online via Ticket2me.net/DavidHaldane.

Kawa Pilipinas is a volunteer-driven community kitchen that provides clean, delicious and nutritious meals to the homeless, urban poor communities, children, and elderly with special needs, as well as persons deprived of liberty and survivors of natural and human-induced calamities. For the past five years, it has been making a significant impact in the lives of many.
