The National Parks Development Committee, as part of the “Concert at the Park” series and in celebration of the founding anniversary of the Department of Tourism, presents “Adhika,” a collection of Philippine indigenous and traditional dances, on May 11 starting at 5:30 p.m.

The presentation featuring the Philippine Baranggay Folk Dance Troupe and the Parangal Dance Company will be held in the Open-Air Auditorium at Rizal Park in Manila. Admission is free.

“Adhika” will also feature culture bearers Ophelia Grace Addom and Karl Duane Cusay Bawer for the Kalinga, Faisal Monal for the Maguindanaon, and Airia Askalani Obeso for the Tausug.

Codirected by Ronnie del Barrio and Eric Solano, “Adhika” is envisioned as a living tribute to the Philippines’ cultural roots from Luzon’s festive movements to the sacred traditions of Mindanao. It is a call to remember and celebrate the culture bearers, to inspire new generations, and to keep indigenous traditions alive.

Maguindanaon culture bearer Faisal Monal

The Philippine Baranggay Folk Dance Troupe began as a mixed dance class in the 1940s at the Philippine Normal College (now Philippine Normal University) under founder and creative director Dr. Paz Cielo Angeles-Belmonte. It is the longest-running Philippine cultural performance troupe of its kind, with a rich history of training generations of dance educators and performers in Philippine dance and music.

Now led by Del Barrio, its creative director, the troupe has performed extensively in the Philippines, Asean member-states, and elsewhere in the world since its founding. It offers annual workshops, events, and stage productions in the course of its mission to celebrate and preserve Philippine cultural heritage.

The Parangal Dance Company is a nonprofit Filipino folk dance and music company based in San Francisco, California. It preserves and promotes ethnic attire, music, and dance through research, workshops, and performances.

Parangal also aims to serve as a bridge connecting Filipinos in the diaspora to their roots, to give them a sense of pride and identity and to educate diverse communities to foster awareness and appreciation of Philippine culture.
