The pianist Kate Liu, a winner at the International Chopin Competition, makes her Philippine debut on May 2 at the Ayala Museum, where she will perform the works of Chopin, Schumann and Brahms.

This production by Veniccio.com in partnership with MA Piano Academy continues the effort of bringing internationally acclaimed artists to Philippine audiences.

Liu captured the attention of the classical music world at  the 17th International Chopin Competition, in which she won the third prize. She was also recognized on Polish National Radio as the audience’s favorite, winning the Best Mazurka Prize.

A musical form of Polish origin, Chopin’s mazurkas distinctly show his nationalism and deep admiration for his native culture. Liu will play his Op. 30 set along with his Piano Sonata No. 2 in B-flat Minor, Op. 35 (the famous “Funeral March” is in the third movement).

Liu will also play Schumann’s Arabesque in C Major, Op. 18, a lighthearted work that offers the opportunity for her to demonstrate her dreamlike, delicate pianism. In contrast, Brahms’ Piano Sonata No. 1 in C Major, Op. 1, which will mark the concert’s finale, is almost orchestral with its chordal nature.

Born in Singapore, Liu began piano studies at age 4 and trained at the Curtis Institute of Music and The Juilliard School. In 2025, she released her debut album featuring Beethoven and Brahms sonatas with Orchid Classics.

She has toured extensively, performing at renowned venues including the Seoul Arts Center, Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre, Warsaw National Philharmonic, La Maison Symphonique de Montréal, and Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall.

Founded in 2020 as a music school, Veniccio is now one of the Philippines’ private presenters of classical music and is dedicated to bringing world-class performances and artists to Filipino audiences. It is headed by its founders, Rafael Marco Balbin and Abegail Lingad.
